For only $20 you can purchase a unique bowl handcrafted by local potters and a hearty helping of delicious soup, as you make an important contribution helping us nourish our community. Bluegrass Festival Fundraiser

The Friends of the Senior Center will sponsor a Bluegrass Festival from 4 to 8 p.m. Saturday, May 3, at the Community Services Building in Sylva. The Balsam Range Band (Marc Pruett, Tim Surrett, Buddy Melton, Darren Nicholson and Caleb Smith) will be performing, along with Charlie Shuler, Jesse Stephens, and Mountain Faith.

Relay For Life - Jackson County

If you enjoy walking and having a fun time with friends, then you've got to try this year's American Cancer Society Relay for Life! It's an all-night walk to help fight cancer, and annually raises tens of thousands of dollars to benefit cancer research. This year's event begins at 6 p.m. Friday, May 16, at the Jackson County Rec Center in Cullowhee. The overnight activities last until 6 a.m. Saturday, May 17.

Celebrate traditional mountain crafts and enjoy local musicians, dancers and storytellers at the Dillsboro Arts and Music Festival. Held each year on the second Saturday in June, the festival runs from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Dillsboro's quaint shops will be open, and demonstrating crafters will line the streets. Basketry, pottery, weaving, quilting, woodworking, jewelry and stained glass artisans will be on hand.

There are live music and food vendors on Main St. beginning in the late afternoon, and a spectacular fireworks display shot from the old courthouse at dark. Mountain Heritage Day
Cullowhee - WCU

Shortly after daybreak on Saturday, the 33rd annual Mountain Heritage Day kicks off on WCU’s campus with demonstrations of authentic mountain folk arts; three stages of traditional music and dance; exhibitions of shape-note singing and Cherokee stickball; an arts and crafts midway featuring handmade items; food booths with old-fashioned fare; and numerous just-for-fun competitions. Called “an open textbook of Appalachian folk life” by Southern Living magazine, Mountain Heritage Day is held outside, rain or shine. Admission to the festival is free, and shuttle services will transport visitors from outlying parking lots to the festival site. Pets are not allowed, but service animals are welcome.
