Oconee State Park Camping

The main campground, located near the park lake, offers campsites with individual water and electrical hookups and picnic table. These gravel sites accommodate RV's up to 35 ft. While tent campers may use the sites with water and electrical hookups, a designated walk-in tent camping area, located 100 yards off main campground, includes tent pads (limit two tents per pad) and centralized water. Each campground is convenient to restrooms with hot showers. A dump station is available for RV's.

A limited number of sites may be reserved , while remaining sites are rented on a first-come, first-served basis. Two sites may be reserved exclusively for the handicapped. Campsites can be reserved by contacting the park directly.

The primitive group camping area is ideal for organized groups up to 50 people. The area includes central water and nearby restroom facilities. Reservations are accepted, however, no prepayment is required.

Sumter National Forestry Camp Sites

Camping is allowed in developed campgrounds and in designated primitive sites only. This policy, developed in the 1970's reduces conflicts and provides greater safety during the hunting seasons, and reduces littering. Individuals desiring to camp outside these areas may apply for a permit form the local district office. A permit will usually be issued unless conflicts are foreseen.

Groups of fewer than 75 may camp in a campground. Groups of more then 75 require a special use permit in either a campground or un designated area. Groups of any size camping in un designated areas will need a permit.

Campfire permits are not required. However, check with the local district office about fire conditions. Within the Chattooga River corridor, groups with more then 24 participates and/or commercial activities are prohibited without a Special Use Permit issued by the Forest Service.

There is a fee to camp in most of the seasonal camps.

Cherry Hill Recreation Area

Nature's peace and quiet attract many to this 29 acre campground. Enjoy your afternoons visiting the nearby Chattooga River Picnic Area, Wahalla State Fish Hatchery, or Ellicott Rock Wilderness Area. Hike part of the foothills Trail, or take a 30 minute drive northeast to Whitewater Falls, the highest waterfall in the east. Get your exercise by riding a paddle boat on a mountain lake found at Oconee State Park, a few minutes south of the campground. A small park store meets some camper's supply needs. Full Access.

Directions: Follow Highway 28 north of the ranger station, taking the right fork (highway 107). cherry Hill is located a few miles north on the right.

Whetstone Horse Camp

Offering 28 miles of nearby horse trails, Whetstone Horse Camp is a great getaway for horseback riders on both the Rocky Gap (South Carolina) and the Wills Knob (Georgia) Horse Trails.

The camp is located about 13 miles northwest of Wahalla, has 20 sites with parking spurs for horse trailers: 10 are first come, first served, while up to 10 may be reserved. Open year round. Call for current fees.

Directions: Follow Highway 28 north for 6 miles. Turn left onto Whetstone Road. Go straight for about 5 miles. At the four way stop go straight for about 1.5 miles. Pavement ends and a gravel road begins. A sign for Whetstone Horse Camp is about 3/4 mile down the gravel road.
