Settled in the far upper reaches above the Blue Ridge Mountains is the historical mountain country of Watuaga County, North Carolina. Watuaga County is one of the most premier counties in the Blue Ridge Mountain Province. Watauga County was formed in 1849 from parts of Ashe, Caldwell, Wilkes and Yancey Counties. The county was named after the Watauga River, which meaning “beautiful waters,” in the Native American language.
